Patient-Specific In-Silico Modeling of TAVI Patients

The research team at the University of Palermo has made significant progress in developing a non-invasive approach to estimate patient-specific material properties for individuals undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). This innovative approach relies on in-silico modeling and dynamic computed tomography (CT) data to minimize discrepancies between finite-element simulations and imaging data. Upon implementation, the in-silico models demonstrated an excellent agreement with the actual CT shape of the vessel. This breakthrough allows us to overcome current limitations in defining patient-specific computational models, particularly for advanced age TAVI patients where ex-vivo material data is not available.


Within the SimInSitu project, the research team at the University of Palermo has achieved a significant milestone by verifying the patient-specific model in accordance with ASME VV40 standards. Currently, they are conducting an uncertainty analysis to enhance the accuracy of TAVI simulations. Subsequently, a robust validation process will be carried out on a cohort of 100 patients, ultimately improving the credibility of the in-silico model for testing biomedical devices.
